Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled a list of the most common questions asked by new students. If you have any other queries or would like to know more, please feel free to contact us, or better yet, schedule a trial class and come see for yourself!

What is a typical class like?

Before each class students will find a lively, positive environment, children are encouraged to interact and play. Once class begins, students line up and sit “seiza” (kneeling position). Every session starts with a brief meditation. Followed by a warm-up and mobility / stretching exercises. The lesson moves onto basic techniques and combinations, fitness drills as well as varied curriculum for each grade. Once complete there is a brief meditation and sometimes a discussion of what was learned. This is often a great opportunity for students to reflect on the universal benefits of karate training.

What do I need to know before my first class?

Please arrive 15 minutes before class begins. A pre training questionnaire must be completed prior to joining the class. (to complete this in advance please click here), forms are also available at the Dojo. Please dress comfortably, such as track suit bottoms and t-shirt, and perhaps bring a bottle of water. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please make yourself known to instructors upon your arrival. Remember, your first class is free!!!

When will my child grade to a new belt?

We strongly believe that progress must be earned. Our students’ belt level reflects their effort and development in Seido Karate. Students are invited to grade when they are ready.

What happens during grading?

Students will attend a specific grading session. This is intended as an opportunity for students to display all they have learned, performing to the best of their ability. When complete they should feel a sense of achievement and celebration, before progressing to the next level of training.

Will my child attend sparring classes?

Students will not be expected to spar until they achieve green belt. This will typically take a few years of training depending on the student’s commitment and age.

Sparring at Seido London Shibu is done with the aim of safely building skills. Senior students are expected to help with the development of newer students. Special care is taken with children in our classes. At Seido London Shibu, safety is paramount.
